World Cup 2026: Jurgen Klopp agrees deal in principle to become Germany coach

Jurgen Klopp has reached an agreement in principle to become the new head coach of Germany's men's national team.

The former Liverpool boss met senior German football association (DFB) officials in New York on Friday.

While the DFB said more talks were planned next week and an agreement with Red Bull, where Klopp has been head of global football since January 2025, is still to be reached, it is now just a matter of time before Klopp replaces Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following the team's early World Cup exit.

South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just weeks after featuring for his country at the World Cup.

Adams featured in all three of South Africa's group games at the tournament, where they reached the knockout stages before losing to co-hosts Canada in the round of 32.

"It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams," South Africa's minister of sport, arts and culture Gayton McKenzie said, in a statement.

Scottie Scheffler missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open, ending a 78-tournament streak where the world No 1 has made it through to the weekend.

Scheffler started day two three shots off the pace as part of a congested leaderboard topped by a five-man leading group including Rory McIlroy.

But the 30-year-old American lost ground with a second-round, two-over 72 that left him level par overall, nine shots off the summit and, crucially, a stroke shy of the projected cut line which was one under at the time, although that subsequently moved to two under.

Michael Edwards has left his role as chief executive officer (CEO) of football for Fenway Sports Group (FSG), who own Liverpool, leaving the club ahead of the 2026/27 season.

A statement from FSG added it was a "planned transition", bringing an end to two spells at Anfield for Edwards.

Sky Sports News' Vinny O'Connor said: "What we're told is Edwards actually informed FSG in the autumn of 2025 that he intended to leave Liverpool once he felt they were in the right place for the future. The expectation from the outset was that this would likely be the summer of 2026.

Stokes' farewell address to the England dressing room, in which he announced his retirement during the fourth day's play of last month's final Test against New Zealand, is understood to have attracted the attention of the world governing body.
