Jaguar's Future Rides on a Complete Rethink of its Products, Starting with the Type 01 Sedan

MSRP
By Drew DorianOverview
Jaguar is on the cusp of entering a new era, one where its vehicles are not only electric but also compete in the ultimate luxury vehicle segment with a four-door sedan called Type 01. Jaguar has released precious few details about the new luxury sedan, but in photos of a camouflaged prototype, we can see that it will be a large car with a long hood and a steeply raked windshield.
Few details have emerged about the Type 01's possible powertrain, but we imagine it will offer two electric motors, all-wheel drive, and at least 600 horsepower. Otherwise, it would find itself at odds with other ultimate luxury EVs such as the Cadillac Celestiq, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS680 SUV, and the Rolls-Royce Spectre. We're also hoping to see driving range estimates in the neighborhood of 300 to 400 miles. Jaguar has let it slip that the top powertrain option will offer 986 ponies. Color us intrigued. More information will trickle out over the next year or so as the sedan marches closer to production.
What's New for 2028?
The Type 01 will ride on a new electric vehicle platform. The new model shares nothing with Jaguar’s I-Pace SUV, which went out of production after the 2024 model year.
C/D Expert Tip:
If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance
Jaguar hasn't revealed much about the Type 01's powertrain, except that the most powerful model will offer up to 986 horsepower. The company has also confirmed that the new grand tourer will only be offered with an electric powertrain and that the car's platform is not designed to accept internal combustion or hybrid powerplants.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: The Type 01 bucks tradition with a minimalist interior free of dark burl wood veneers and analog gauges. Instead, it adopts a clean and uncluttered look with brushed brass accents and few physical switches and controls. A slim center console runs the entire length of the cabin, dividing up seating into four roomy quadrants
Second Row: Rear seat passengers are treated to their own space, but amenities in the back seat have not yet been detailed. Given the Type 01’s desired positioning in the ultra-luxury category, we expect to see comfortable seating with massage, but we’ll know more closer to the car’s official debut.
Cargo Capacity: Jaguar has not yet released info on the Type 01’s trunk space yet, but we could see storage compartments at the back as well as the front of the vehicle. When we get a chance, we’ll stuff the Type 01’s front and rear trunks with carry-on suitcases and update this story with test results.

As more information becomes available, we'll update this story with more details about:
- 0–60-MPH Times
- Range, Charging, and Battery Life
- Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe
- Infotainment and Connectivity
- Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
- Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
