How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:

Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Wordle Bot Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.

SPOIL was an amazing opening guess, with a green and two yellow boxes and, I’d later learn, just 14 words remaining. I guessed THYME next to try to get some other common letters out of the way and unfortunately that turned up all grey boxes and I had three words to choose from. I was really torn between SLING and SLINK but just went for the former. Lucky for me, that was the Wordle!

The Bot and I each get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 for tying. Our July totals tiptoe forward:

Erik: -1 points

Wordle Bot: 6 points

Today’s Wordle Etymology

“Sling” comes from Old Norse slyngva, meaning “to hurl, fling, or throw,” and is related to other Germanic words for twisting or winding. It originally referred both to the action of throwing and to the strap-like weapon used to hurl stones.
