Super League: Wigan thrash Toulouse to move second as Huddersfield win third straight match with victory over Catalans

Sam Halsall and Connor Wrench both went over for doubles as Huddersfield beat Catalans Dragons 42-20 for their third successive Super League win.

The Giants raced into an 18-point lead inside the opening 15 minutes through Halsall's double and Fenton Rogers before further tries from Wrench, Sam Hewitt and Zane Dunford put them 36-0 up at half-time.

Catalans rallied in the second half despite the dismissal of loose forward Franck Maria for a high tackle, with Ben Condon scoring twice and further efforts from Leo Darrelatour and Charlie Staines, while Wrench also added his second as Giants claimed the spoils.

Halsall raced 80 metres for an early interception try and prop Rogers barged over for Giants' second before Halsall dived over in the corner to put the home side in control.

Centre Wrench followed up winger Lewis Jagger's break to go over, Hewitt dotted down Tuimoala Lolohea's kick and Dunford crashed over for the Giants' sixth first-half try, with George Flanagan nailing all six conversions.

Catalans responded early in the second half when second row Condon burst over for Toby Sexton to convert, but another converted long-range interception try by Wrench restored Huddersfield's 36-point lead.

Maria was then sent off for the visitors in the 62nd minute for a high tackle on George King and although Catalans went over through Condon's try and efforts from Darrelatour and Staines, they were only consolations.

The Giants remain bottom of the table, but their third straight Super League win came after a club announcement at half-time in which they outlined plans to groundshare with Dewsbury at Flair Stadium next season.

Wigan moved up to second as they overcame some first-half resistance from Toulouse before running away with it after the interval in a 48-18 win.

Zach Eckersley and Liam Marshall scored in both halves in an eight-try win for the Warriors, with Harry Smith boasting a 100 per cent conversion rate from the kicking tee at the Brick Community Stadium.

But Wigan, who moved to within two points of league leaders Leeds, did not have things all their own way, with their French visitors drawing level at 18-18 shortly before half-time.

Toulouse opened the scoring through Paul Ulberg stepping off the flank for a try but Eckersley touched down following a cut-out pass from Bevan French, who powered his way over soon after to put Wigan ahead.

Marshall then dotted down as Wigan looked to be moving up a gear but Romeo Tropis and Cesar Rouge struck either side of the half hour, with Rouge converting both to drag Toulouse level.

Wigan, though, went in at the break with a six-point lead when Noah Hodkinson went over in the right corner and from there, the home side did not look back.

Hodkinson turned provider at the start of the second half, passing back inside for Eckersley's second, while Sam Eseh crashed his way through several defenders to go over underneath the posts.

Jai Field raced on to French's chip over the top before Marshall's acrobatic finish and Smith's conversion made it 30 unanswered points as Wigan sealed an emphatic win to leapfrog Wakefield in the table.

Warrington scored seven tries to thrash Bradford 42-4 and stay in the race for a top-two finish in the Betfred Super League.

The fourth-placed Wolves are six points behind leaders Leeds and four points off Wigan in second with a game in hand.

Matty Ashton (2), Albert Hopoate, Toby King, Joe Philbin, Jordy Crowther and Ewan Irwin went over as second-from-bottom Bradford had their winless streak extended to nine games.

The 18-year-old Irwin converted every try and has now had 15 consecutive successful kicks at goals.

Despite Ethan Ryan striking an early blow for the Bulls with his 13th Super League try of the season, the result was never in doubt after Warrington established command halfway through the first period.

Ashton, Hopoate and King scored before the break and the flawless kicking of Irwin made it 18-4.

Bradford prop Jamie Gill had a try disallowed after Chris Atkin pulled back Danny Walker, further proof that it was not to be the Bulls' day.

Warrington did not take their foot off the gas as four more tries completed the rout, Irwin's the pick of the bunch after the teenager's twinkling footwork left the Bulls defence bemused.
